This original oil painting depicts the moment an initiate is about to be retrieved to be taken to his initiation. The light from a slightly opened door hits the floor and back wall as the subject turns to see who is there. This painting was done by the artist for his own reasons and was not a commission. Ryan is a Freemason, and is highly interested in the preservation of the spiritual and esoteric traditions of the Craft. This painting was intended to make the audience think about what makes a good initiate, and a potential member of the craft and also to remind them that there should be a feeling of mystery, excitement and honor when joining the fraternity.
“I wanted to show that moment when this man’s life is about to change. He has been sitting along for a time and has no idea what is about to happen to him, then the door opens and the story begins. It was that exact moment I was interested in portraying.”
