The Master and the Apprentice

Oil on Canvas, 36 x 24in, 2019

This painting, based on a neo-classical piece, portrays a master stone mason working late into the night as his young apprentice holds a candle up so he can work. Using subtle color choices and compositional choices this piece also alludes to lessons of alchemy, personal growth, and other philosophical ideas.

“This painting tested my skills as it had an awkward lighting source, and the details of the old man’s beard were particularly challenging. It turned into one of my more popular paintings due to the amount of in-progress updates I posted on social media.”  -Ryan Flynn
